ALT Lessons introduction
ALT Lessons may be of interest to new and experienced Assistant Language Teachers alike. Here you will find a short selection of lessons that I use over and over when I teach at elementary schools in Japan. There may only be a small number of ideas but in my experience they provide the basis for solid elementary school lessons.
Working as an ALT can be great fun. My philosophy is that by having fun with kids while they are young they may go on to develop their interest in English as they proceed through the education system. To that end I see myself as more of an English facilitator rather than an English teacher.
The ALT lesson plans that are on this site are mostly based on games I played when I went to primary school in Scotland. Other lessons come from games I have learned as an ALT since I came to Japan. What all the lessons have in common is that I use them and the kids love them. The lesson plans I have written cover a full lesson period (45 minutes at elementary school and 50 minutes at junior high school).
All the lessons on this site are heavily game centered. Setting up the lessons so that kids associate English with fun is one of my main objectives. The majority of the lesson plans may well contain games you remember from your childhood. To be a great ALT you don't have to be original you just have to be good. Rather than try to reinvent the wheel, I simply use themes and games that I enjoyed when I was young and introduce them to a younger generation in Japan.
The game that always seems to get the best reaction is the game we call Pirates. I used to play it quite a lot when I was younger only we called it by a different name. I've a feeling you'll know it too! There are also some how to articles that discuss various aspects of how to conduct yourself at work.
Have fun at ALT Lessons.
